Hi! I’ve a laptop and a desktop (both have xp). I want them to connect to the internet simultunously. I have an 8 port switch but dont have a router. My Isp provides me static (private ip with 172 series) ip which is forced in my laptops lan card through Lan connection from ISP ( its a cable connection). it requires a user name and password to login to the net. I can connect to one comp to the net .. no probs.. But If i try to connect my desktop via switch using any ip of the same 172 series. Desktop asks for the user name/password again and if I connect the desktop laptop disconnects and vice versa.
So. Plz tell how I should go about it?? How can i connect both the computer to the internet at once??
Answers and suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance..

Put an other NIC in the Desktop and connect the laptop to the second NIC either directly or through the switch. Use XP’s setup wizzard to share the internet connection through the Desktop. This is called an Ad Hoc LAN.
Where I live at we have Wide Open West and Comcast. Comcast only allows one IP address, hence you would need a router to use multiple computers. On the other hand Wide open West supplies three IP addresses per household, so a switch could be used..
I am not understanding why you need to enter in a username and password but try this:
I would say connect the switch directly to your cable modem.
then connect both your desktop and laptop directly into the switch. You will have to changer you network setting from static to dynamic.
Or you can connect the desktop directly to the cable modem and add another network card to the desktop connect the second NIC card to the switch and connect the laptop to the switch.
Hope this helped
in your connection properties make the connection to your isp, even if you do not need it. than go into that and share your network connection to other computer. you main system will need to be on but this will allow the connection to work on both units.
